Filing an income tax extension involves submitting a formal request to the tax authorities to extend the deadline for filing your tax return.
This extension generally grants an additional six months beyond the original due date, which is April 15th. This allows taxpayers to submit their income tax returns by October 15th, unless otherwise required by specific States.
It's important to note that while an extension gives you more time to file your return, it does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed.
Therefore, taxpayers must still estimate and pay their tax liability by the original filing deadline to avoid penalties and interest charges.
*As defined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
